The State Duma introduced amendments on a life sentence for treason

The State Duma introduced amendments to the Criminal Code, which toughen the punishment for terrorism and treason. If they are accepted by the accused in treason, the term up to life will be threatened. The terms for preparing or committing terrorist acts will also be significantly increased.
The amendments were announced by the Chairman of the Committee on Security and Anti-Corruption of the State Duma Vasyl Pyskarev. He clarified that the deputies will not introduce a new draft law – they will supplement the initiative No. 232768-8, which has already passed the first reading and is preparing for the second. According to Pyskarev, this will allow consideration of amendments promptly.
In addition to a life sentence for treason, it is proposed to toughen the punishment for terrorist acts. The maximum prison term directly for committing a terrorist attack may increase to 20 years (currently 15 years). It is proposed to raise the minimum threshold for aiding terrorist activity from 5 to 7 years (the maximum term under this article is 15 years), for aiding and abetting – from 10 to 12 years (the maximum term is 20 years). For the organization of a terrorist community, it is proposed to give from 10 to 15 years of imprisonment (now from five to 10 years). For sabotage – up to 20 years (now – up to 15 years).

Attempts were made to set fire to several dozen military enlistment centers and other state institutions. The General Staff of the Russian Federation stated that cases of arson of military enlistment centers will be considered acts of terrorism. Previously, similar actions were considered most often as hooliganism and damage to state property.
