The State Duma suspended the Statute and conventions of the Council of Europe

On Thursday, the State Duma adopted a law on the termination of the Charter of the Council of Europe and 20 international treaties adopted within the framework of this organization, from which Russia was included in March of last year after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “Kommersant” reports that the deputies voted unanimously.

Russian President Vladimir Putin introduced the bill in January. The document recognizes 21 international treaties as having lost their effect in relation to Russia since March 16 of last year, among them the Charter of the Council of Europe, the Convention on the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, the European Convention on the Suppression of Terrorism, the European Charter of Local Self-Government, and the Social Charter.

• On March 16, 2022, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe approved a resolution on the expulsion of Russia from the organization. On the same day, Russia announced its withdrawal from the Council of Europe, after 26 years of participation in this organization, which unites almost all the countries of the European continent. Russia stopped participating in the work of PACE, and also decided not to comply with the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights issued after March 15, 2022.
• On January 9, Vladimir Putin submitted a bill to the State Duma to withdraw from the Council of Europe Convention on Criminal Liability for Corruption. In this regard, it was noted that in the future the international community will not be able to influence the methods of fighting corruption in Russia. In July of last year, Moscow stopped participating in a series of agreements of the Council of Europe.
