The State Duma adopted in the first reading the draft law, which excludes the commission of a crime by police officers from the number of aggravating circumstances. This is reported on the website of the lower house of the parliament. Now, according to Russian laws, policemen who have committed an intentional crime are punished more severely than civilians.
Deputies believe that this discriminates against police officers. The initiators of the draft law are deputies from the CPRF. The authors proposed to eliminate “actual discrimination”.
“Introduction of the proposed amendment will avoid underlining the undeserved and unfair mistrust of the current employees of the internal affairs bodies of Russia,” says the explanatory note to the document.
Police service was recognized as an aggravating circumstance in 2010, during a large-scale reform of the department. It began after a series of high-profile crimes committed by policemen (then they were called militiamen).
One of the most famous was the case of police major Denis Evsyukov. On the night of April 27, 2009, he opened fire on visitors and employees of a store in Moscow. The court found him guilty of 2 murders and 22 attempted murders. He is now serving a life sentence.
