Oleg Tabakov’s Moscow Theater will show the play “Matrosskaya Tishina” in Russian-controlled Luhansk and Donetsk. This will be the first tour of one of the leading Moscow theaters in the occupied cities after the start of the war in Ukraine, writes “Agentstvo”. As the publication found out, the presidential fund of cultural initiatives allocated 55 million rubles for the performance. The shows will be held from August 1, 2023 to December 2024.

As Novaya Gazeta Evropa reports, the main role in the play will be played by Vladimir Mashkov, who supports the Russian military invasion of Ukraine and President Vladimir Putin. He is the artistic director of the theater.

The performance based on Alexander Halych’s play “Matrosskaya Tishina” was staged by the Tabakov Theater in the 1990s. He tells about a family from the Jewish town of Tulchyn in Ukraine, which was under German occupation during the Second World War.

The application for the presidential grant, in particular, states that the production is relevant because “during the period of development of Russophobic attitudes, culture plays one of the most important roles.” An example of Russophobia is the downplaying of Russia’s role in the victory over Germany in World War II. It is not specified what relation “Russophobia” has to the play about Jewish residents of Ukraine and the Holocaust.

The production for the presidential grant has already been shown in the annexed Crimea. The application for the grant was submitted by the Center for Political and Social Technologies, the director of which is associate professor of the Moscow State Linguistic University Eduard Shultz.

According to the information posted on the university’s website, Schultz is a political technologist and PR specialist, worked in electoral campaigns for 25 years, headed the PR services of large holdings and the press services of the regional government.
