The U.S. House of Representatives and Senate approved a 45-day interim budget that avoids a government shutdown. US President Joe Biden signed the document a few minutes before the deadline.
If the budget had not been approved, the government would have shut down on October 1. As a result, tens of thousands of federal employees would be placed on unpaid leave, and various state services would be suspended.
The draft budget was proposed by Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and does not include aid to Ukraine. This version of the budget is connected with the position of the conservative wing of the Republicans, who control the lower house of Congress.
A representative of the administration of American President Joe Biden said that the White House, most likely, will support the project proposed by McCarthy – in the hope of later restoring assistance to Ukraine.
Earlier, Finance Minister Janet Yellen said that a partial shutdown of the government would “undermine” the country’s economic progress, as small business, maternity and childhood support programs would be suspended, and major infrastructure projects could be delayed.
