Washington declared two employees of the Russian embassy working in the United States as persons non grata. This was reported by the US State Department on Friday.
According to the representative of the State Department, the actions of the United States in relation to the officials of the Russian Embassy are a clear signal that “unacceptable steps” in relation to the personnel of the American Embassy in Moscow will have consequences. The State Department noted that two Russians were ordered to leave the United States in response to the expulsion of two American diplomats from Moscow.
In mid-September, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia declared two employees of the American embassy in the country undesirable persons and demanded that they leave Russian territory within seven days. The decision was made in relation to the first secretary of the US Embassy, Geoffrey Sillin, and the second secretary, David Bernstein, who were pointed out to the incompatibility of their actions with diplomatic status. Sillin and Bernstein allegedly maintained contact with Robert Shonov, an ex-employee of the US consulate in Vladivostok, who is now under arrest. He was allegedly given tasks for material compensation with the aim of harming Russia’s national security.
The US Embassy in Moscow then denied all accusations of the Russian side and expressed a strong protest in connection with the “intimidation and harassment of embassy employees”.
