The USA plans to impose a 200% tariff on Russian aluminum

The United States of America is considering introducing a 200% duty on aluminum imports from Russia. This was reported by the Bloomberg agency on Monday. The decision can be made already this week.

The US authorities considered sanctions against Russian aluminum back in February 2022, but then rejected this measure. Now, according to Bloomberg, the US wants to introduce an unprecedented tariff due to the fact that Russia is dumping on the aluminum market.

The main Russian exporter of aluminum is the Rusal company, founded by businessman Oleg Deripaska. Before the military invasion of Ukraine, Russian exports accounted for about 10 percent of all aluminum purchased by the United States. After the introduction of international sanctions, the share of Russian aluminum exporters in the American market decreased to three percent. Replacing them for the American economy will not be difficult, according to Bloomberg sources.

In the fall of 2022, it was reported that the administration of Joe Biden is considering the possibility of a complete ban on the import of aluminum from Russia. Three possible scenarios were taken into account: a complete ban on the purchase of Russian aluminum, an increase in purchase tariffs to the point of being actually prohibitive, or the imposition of severe sanctions on Rusal as a key exporter.
