This year, March became the warmest in recorded history, a new temperature record was registered for 10 months in a row. This was reported by the Reuters agency with reference to the European Climate Change Service Copernicus.
According to the organization, the past 12 months are also considered the hottest period ever recorded. From April 2023 to March 2024, the average global temperature was 1.58 degrees Celsius higher than the average temperature in the pre-industrial period of 1850-1900.
“Watching these records month after month really shows us that our climate is changing, changing rapidly,” Copernicus Deputy Director Samantha Burgess said.
As Reuters notes, 2023 has already become the hottest year on the planet, climate change has led to a record number of forest fires in Venezuela and drought in South Africa.
According to Copernicus, the main cause of the heat was anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases. Climatologist Friederika Otto said that the failure to reduce these emissions will contribute to further warming, which will lead to more severe droughts, fires, abnormal heat and torrential rains.
