Turkey: In Istanbul, they came close to extending the “grain agreement”

The parties to the so-called “grain agreement” are approaching an agreement on its extension after two days of negotiations in Istanbul.

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar stated this on May 12, according to “European Truth”, quoted by the state-run Turkish agency Anadolu.

The quadrilateral meeting in Istanbul regarding the “grain agreement” at the level of the deputy defense ministers of Turkey, Russia, Ukraine and representatives of the UN took place in a positive direction, noted Akar.

“We are getting closer to an agreement on the extension of the grain agreement,” the minister said.

The head of the Ministry of Defense of Turkey reminded that more than 30 million tons of agricultural products were already exported from the Black Sea ports as part of the “grain agreement”.

“Thanks to this agreement, the global food crisis was largely prevented, and stability was ensured in the markets,” Akar emphasized.

The head of the defense department reminded that six Turkish merchant ships remain in the ports of Ukraine. “A framework agreement has been reached on the safe return of these vessels to Turkish ports. We are continuing our efforts in this direction,” Akar added.

May 10-11 negotiations on the “grain agreement” took place in Istanbul at the level of deputy defense ministers of Turkey, Ukraine, Russia and UN representatives.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said that the so-called the “grain agreement” can be extended for at least two months.

Last July, the UN and Turkey reached an agreement to export Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea to help address the global food crisis caused by Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Representatives of Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and the UN are part of the Joint Coordination Center (JCC) in Istanbul, which is engaged in the implementation of the agreement.
