Tuva is recognized as the least prosperous region of Russia

Like last year, Tuva was the least prosperous region of Russia in the quality of life rating compiled by RIA-Rating at the end of 2022. Ingushetia is in the penultimate place, the Jewish Autonomous Region, Transbaikal Territory and Buryatia are also in the top five outsiders.
According to data at the end of 2021, a third of Tuva’s population lived below the poverty line.
Moscow, St. Petersburg, Moscow region, Tatarstan and Krasnodar region became the most prosperous regions. The oil-producing regions of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, Tyumen Oblast and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug – on 9, 16 and 17 places, respectively.
Compilers of the rating took into account 67 indicators characterizing the quality of life of the population, including the population’s income level, housing conditions, safety of residence, demographic situation, as well as environmental and climatic conditions.
- In 2021, the Republics of the North Caucasus, as well as Tuva, Buryatia, Transbaikalia and the Republic of Altai were recognized as the regions with the highest unemployment rate in the country.
- During the war in Ukraine, the least prosperous regions of the country became the leaders in the number of people killed at the front. The number of dead soldiers in Buryatia approached 400, in the Trans-Baikal region – 270, in Tuva – exceeded 140, according to the investigation of the Russian service of the BBC. We are talking about confirmed losses, while the real number of dead may turn out to be an order of magnitude higher.
