Details: The publication emphasizes that in the December report, the International Monetary Fund called the restoration of “oligarchic interests” in Ukraine one of the risks for reforms and future donor support.
Valeria Gontareva, the former head of the NBU, told Bloomberg that the embezzlement of money that will be allocated to the so-called “Marshall Plan” could become a serious threat to Ukraine. In her opinion, “donors are not afraid of old oligarchs, they are afraid of new ones.”
The agency writes, referring to an unnamed European diplomat, that the G7 countries are putting pressure on the Ukrainian authorities with the demand to resume reforms and the fight against corruption.
“Ukraine still has problems with cleaning up the judicial and tax systems, as well as with the digitalization of state processes, which aims to ensure transparency. Because of this, the future of Ukraine can be ruined again by corruption,” – the publication believes.
Bloomberg notes that Ukraine is becoming an increasingly centralized and militarized state, and Volodymyr Zelenskyi is pursuing policies that could hinder postwar liberalization.
“The government actually took full control of large state-owned companies, in particular Ukrnafta and Ukrtatnafta, which were previously in the sphere of interests of Ihor Kolomoisky,” the publication says.
The formation of a new oligarchic class can negatively affect the prospects of Ukraine, as it will inhibit the inflow of foreign investments and the demonopolization of the market, the publication writes.
