Ukraine finally returned the “Medvedchuk pipe” to state ownership

The Supreme Court finally recognized the state’s ownership of the Ukrainian part of the main oil pipeline “Samara – Western direction”, known as the “Medvedchuk Pipeline”.

The oil pipeline was built during the times of the USSR and was supposed to become state property after the declaration of Ukraine’s independence.
However, this did not happen and for many years it was used by the Russian company “Transnefteprodukt”.
FSMU tried to return this asset to state ownership since 2011. In 2017, NABU and SAP began an investigation into the circumstances of the transfer of ownership of the pipeline.
According to the results of the investigation, VAKS seized the asset, and from 2021 it was transferred to the management of JSC “Ukrtransnafta”.
Also in 2021, the FSMU filed a lawsuit with the Economic Court of Zhytomyr region, in which it asked to recognize the state’s ownership of the pipeline. “In June 2023, the court sided with the Fund. And yesterday the Supreme Court did not satisfy the cassation appeal. In this way, Ukraine defended its right to this property,” Koval added.
Currently, the state’s ownership of the pipeline is being registered.
