The Ukrainian military is verifying the information about the possible death in the Zaporozhye region of the Chief of Staff of the 35th Combined Arms Army of Russia, Major General Sergei Horyachev. Valery Shershen, a representative of the United Press Center of the Defense Forces of the Tavrichesky Direction, reported this.
Russian pro-war blogger Yury Kotenok wrote about the death of General Goryachev on Monday evening. “As a result of an enemy missile attack, the Chief of Staff of the 35th Combined Arms Army, Major General Sergey Goryachev, was killed,” Kotenok wrote, noting that this happened on June 12 during the fighting in the Zaporozhye region on the so-called Vremyevsk salient. There, Ukrainian forces have gone on the offensive in recent days and occupied several populated areas.
“According to representatives of the OGV command, the army lost today one of the brightest and most effective military commanders,” Kotenok wrote. His message was quoted by many Russian and Ukrainian mass media, but there were no other sources that would have reported the general’s death by mid-day on June 13. The Ministry of Defense of Russia also did not comment on the message.
Earlier, the Russian authorities directly or indirectly confirmed the death of four generals during the war in Ukraine. The Ukrainian side claimed a greater number of those killed.
Goryachev was the commander of the 201st Russian base in Tajikistan, at the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Goryachev was the commander of the 5th separate tank brigade, and during the war he rose to the position of chief of the army staff. He recently received the rank of major general.
On June 13, the fighting on the Vremyevsky ridge continues, while there are no reports of a new advance of Ukrainian forces or their retreat.
