Ukraine will be able to join the EU in less than two years – Shmyhal

Ukraine is completing the implementation of seven recommendations of the European Commission, allowing to launch the following steps for integration. The government expects to close all chapters of negotiations on accession and to sign an agreement on Ukraine’s membership in the EU within two years. This was announced by the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal at a government meeting on January 13, the Government Portal reports.

“It is necessary to analyze the compliance of our legislation with the legislation of the European Union in order to clearly understand the scope of work that needs to be performed. In parallel with the assessment of compliance, adoption and implementation of European legislation, we will prepare for direct negotiations regarding the accession itself,” said Denis Shmyhal.
As the head of the government explained, the negotiating position of Ukraine will be formed, which will determine the strengths, limits of compromises, how the accession to the EU will affect certain sectors of the economy and the state as a whole. Teams of negotiators from the Ukrainian side will be formed, who will be able to professionally discuss details in various areas. According to the Prime Minister, this will be the basis for the opening of official accession negotiations.
“Next, we are waiting for the path of negotiations, which should culminate in the signing of the Agreement on the accession of Ukraine to the EU. We expect to complete this journey in less than 2 years. And then Ukraine will become a full member of the EU. All barriers to trade, restrictions on the movement of labor will be finally abolished, Ukraine will get access to structural and investment funds of the EU,” the head of government noted.

Shmyhal also noted that the volume of work is colossal, but at the same time, European partners are also keen on productive cooperation in the field of integration.
“The visit of the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in the coming weeks will be a vivid proof of that. We expect that more than 10 European Commissioners will arrive in Ukraine together with Mrs. von der Leyen to hold intergovernmental consultations. This will not only be an important signal of Ukraine’s further support in the war, but will also demonstrate that the EU is open to the negotiation process on Ukraine’s accession,” the prime minister summed up.
