World Bank: in Ukraine, 7.1 million people found themselves in poverty

Last year, the poverty rate in Ukraine rose from 5.5% to 24.2% — 7.1 million people were below the poverty line. This is stated in the report of the World Bank, writes The Guardian.

Expensive life
In Ukraine, food, fuel, and services have gone up sharply — some of them by 50%.
“Given that unemployment is unofficially 36%, and inflation reached 26.6% at the end of 2022, in the future more and more Ukrainians may find themselves in poverty,” warned Arup Banerji, regional director of the Eastern European Institution.
As for the level of poverty, there is a big gap between cities and villages. The most tangible consequences of impoverishment are in rural areas.
Economist Elena Bylan said that the situation could have been even worse without a huge package of financial support from the international community.

“We observe a 30% drop in GDP mainly because Ukraine exports 80% of its goods through ports to which it no longer has access. We had inflation of 26% — again, what could have been worse — but people’s salaries also remained unchanged, and the currency depreciated against the dollar by 20%,” she told reporters.
Bylan added that the most problematic in this situation remains the issue of employment.
