Consultations on the continuation of the “grain agreement” continue – UN

[ad_1]

The UN said that consultations on the continuation of the Black Sea “grain initiative” are ongoing.

It is reported yahoo.news.

“The United Nations will do everything possible to preserve the integrity of the agreement and ensure its continuity. Consultations … with all parties and at various levels are ongoing,” Jens Laerke, spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, told reporters.

Laerke’s comments came after a one-day meeting in Geneva between senior Russian and UN officials, which ended with Moscow announcing that it would not oppose the continuation of the so-called Black Sea “grain initiative”. However, Russia has agreed to extend the agreement, which expires on Saturday, March 18, for only half of the original 120-day period – 60 days.

Ukraine said it “contradicts” the original agreement, but did not reject the offer.

“This is a good agreement… It has a very good effect on world food prices, lowering them, putting food on the market in the right places,” the UN spokesman said.

However, it remains unclear what further consultations will lead to – Laerke replied to journalists’ questions that he could not say what to expect on March 18.

We remind you:

The contract for the export of Ukrainian grain through the Russian-controlled Black Sea expires on March 18.

Earlier, the mass media reported that Ukraine started online negotiations with partners regarding the continuation of the Black Sea Grain Initiative aimed at ensuring that Kyiv can continue supplying grain to world markets.

The initiative was launched with the mediation of the United Nations and Turkey last July, and was extended in November.

Russia declares that the “grain initiative” was extended for 60 days and called it a “gesture of goodwill” on its part, at the same time, the Ukrainian side has not yet confirmed the statement of the Russian Federation.
