The Soviet Fed approved the law on punishment for assisting in the execution of the decisions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs

The Federation Council on Wednesday approved a bill on criminal punishment for supporting the decisions of international organizations in which Russia does not participate. According to the draft law, it is possible to receive up to five years in prison for such actions. This also applies to supporting the decisions of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, which in March issued a warrant for the arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A new article numbered 284.3 should appear in the Criminal Code. It will include “assistance in the implementation of decisions of international organizations in which Russia does not participate, as well as foreign state bodies on the criminal prosecution of officials, military personnel and volunteers assisting in the implementation of tasks assigned to the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.”

The punishment includes a fine in the amount of 300,000 to 1 million rubles, or imprisonment for up to five years without the right to hold certain positions for the same period.

TASS clarifies that these are cases where there are no signs of crimes related to treason and espionage.

  • On March 17, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Children’s Ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova. The court statement stated that they are both suspected of illegal deportation of children from Ukraine. The decision of the International Court of Justice was supported by the USA, most of the EU countries (the EU joint decision was blocked by Hungary) and Ukraine.
  • Russia does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court and does not participate in its work. Since 2016, Moscow has not been a party to the Rome Statute, which defines the actions of the court.
