A criminal case of treason against a 20-year-old resident of Tver was initiated in Belgorod. According to the investigation, the resident of Tver was preparing to join the so-called “Legion of Freedom of Russia”, in which Russian citizens fight on the side of the armed forces of Ukraine. For this purpose, according to the investigators, he came to the Belgorod region, prepared to cross the border illegally and collected information about military operations. In addition, he is suspected of planning to set fire to the military enlistment office.
The Tver resident, whose name is not mentioned, is accused of high treason. Now he is under arrest in a pre-trial detention center. According to the new Russian laws, he could face up to life in prison. Such a law has already been approved by the State Duma and the Federation Council, and is awaiting signature by the President of Russia.
In early April, the court sent another resident of the Tver region, Sergei Kolin, to compulsory psychiatric treatment. According to the investigation, he was also going to join the “Legion of Freedom of Russia” and fight on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The court found Kolin insane.
Also in April, Sergei Glushenkov, a resident of the Belgorod region, was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison. The investigation believes that he also planned to join the same legion.
- “Legion of Freedom of Russia” is a unit of the armed forces of Ukraine, formed mainly from Russian volunteers and prisoners of war. Its participants claim that their goal is the liberation of the regions of Ukraine occupied by the Russian army and the fight against the regime of President Vladimir Putin. The Supreme Court of Russia recognized “Legion” as a terrorist organization.
