“Novaya Gazeta” published a petition in support of director Zhenya Berkovich and playwright Svetlana Petriychuk, who were detained the day before in Moscow in a criminal case on the justification of terrorism.
The case is related to the theatrical production “Finist Yasny Sokol”, based on the stories of women who married radical Islamists.
“We are against the fact that directors, playwrights, artists, whoever they are, should be arrested for a play in the 21st century. We are against the accusatory lie: in the work of the director Evgenia Berkovich and the playwright Svetlana Petriychuk there is not a shadow of justification for terrorism; the play and the play ” Finist is a clear falcon” carries an absolutely clear anti-terrorist call,” the petition says. Berkovich’s anti-war poems are also mentioned there. “We are against terror and its justification, including from falsely understood state expediency. Pursue murderers, not poets!” – said in the petition.
The first to sign it was the editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta, Nobel laureate Dmitry Muratov. At the time of publication of the news, it has about 500 signatures. Muratov also recorded a video call.
Berkovych and Petrychuk will be elected today in the Zamoskvoretsky district court of Moscow. The day before, they were detained after interrogation by the Investigative Committee. Berkovich’s relatives were searched in St. Petersburg.
- The play “Finist Yasny Sokol” was staged in Moscow three years ago, in 2022 it received two “Golden Masks”.
- An application to the law enforcement agencies against Zhenya Berkovich was filed two years ago by activists of the pro-Kremlin movement NOD, reports “Cherta”. Then, in May 2021, they complained about her performance “Finist Yasny Sokol”, called the production “anti-Russian” and saw in it a “threat to the security of Russia”.
