On Tuesday, the Ministry of Defense of Russia published a video with Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov. He has not appeared in public since July 10.
As stated in the message, Gerasimov, who at the same time is the commander of the Russian group leading the war in Ukraine, checked the “forward control point of the troop group in the Zaporozhye direction.” On the video, Gerasimov allegedly listens to the officers’ reports. The Ministry of Defense clarifies that among them was the commander of the group, Colonel-General Alexander Romanchuk.
On June 23-24, PMC “Wagner” led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, demanding, among other things, the resignation of Gerasimov, carried out an armed march on Moscow. The Russian authorities characterized it as a rebellion. Following the speech, PMC mercenaries began relocating to Belarus, while Gerasimov and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu remained in their positions. At the same time, Gerasimov, unlike Shoigu, did not appear in public, which gave rise to various rumors. In response to these messages, on July 10, the Ministry of Defense showed a video with Gerasimov, which was allegedly made in Rostov-on-Don.
Some high-ranking officers, in particular the former commander of the troops Sergey Surovykin, however, have not appeared in public since the Prigozhin rebellion itself. A number of Western mass media, citing sources, wrote with confidence that he could be arrested or interned. Officially, nothing was reported about the fate of Surovykin and a number of other generals.
At the end of June, many pro-government Telegram channels wrote that General Mikhail Teplinsky could replace Gerasimov as commander of the operation. Later, however, there were reports that, on the contrary, Teplinsky fell into disgrace. Also, for criticizing Gerasimov, the commander of the 58th Army, General Ivan Popov, was removed from his post.
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently praised another high-ranking general, Andrei Mordvychev, for his actions at the front.
