Valery Gergiev will lead the Moscow Bolshoi Theater

The artistic director and general director of St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theater, conductor Valery Gergiev, can also lead the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. This is reported by the Russian mass media with reference to informed sources. It is assumed that Gergiev will combine the posts of general director of two main opera theaters of Russia: Mariinsky and Bolshoi.
According to sources, Gergiev’s new appointment will be announced at the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum, which will be held from November 16 to 18. The current general director of the Bolshoi Theater, Vladimir Uryn, will resign at his own request.
The Mariinsky Theater itself and the Ministry of Culture of Russia refused to comment on this information to journalists.
- Valery Gergiev has been the general director and artist of the Mariinsky Opera and Ballet Theater since 1988. He is considered a close friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and was his confidant during the presidential election. In early March 2022, Gergiev was fired from the Munich Philharmonic, where he was chief conductor, for refusing to distance himself from the war with Ukraine. Gergiev is under the sanctions of Ukraine, in March 2022 he was banned from entering Lithuania. Earlier, Gergiev was listed by the Fund for Combating Corruption in the shortened TOP-200 list of corruptors and warmongers.
