The European Union put Ekaterina Mizulyna on the sanctions list

The European Union has updated the list of personal sanctions imposed on persons whom Europe considers violators of human rights and freedoms. It included member of the Public Chamber of Russia Ekaterina Myzulyna and the League of Safe Internet, which she heads. The decision of the European Union states that Myzulyna and her organization engage in censorship, violate freedom of speech and self-expression, and that Myzulyna personally initiates denunciations of Internet content authors who she considers insufficiently loyal to the Kremlin’s official policy.

In addition, the judge of the Basmanny District Court of Moscow, Ekaterina Levashova, who handed down sentences in the cases of oppositionists, including Vladimir Kara-Murza, the prosecutor Oleg Alipov and the judge of the Moscow City Court Lyudmila Smolkina, who also dealt with the case of Kara-Murza, were included in the sanctions list.

• The League of Safe Internet, headed by Mizulyna, is a quasi-government organization that actually performs censorship functions in Russia. On the initiative of the League and Ekaterina Mizulyna herself, content that they consider insufficiently “patriotic” or not in line with “traditional values” is regularly removed from the Russian segment of the Internet. This applies to many popular bloggers and artists. Myzulyna also initiates administrative and criminal cases against them.
• In April 2023, Russian opposition politician and journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza was sentenced to 25 years in a penal colony under the articles of treason and the implementation of the activities of an organization deemed undesirable in Russia. International human rights organizations consider him a political prisoner.
