Viktor Demchenko, a 71-year-old citizen of Ukraine, died in Russia, accused of espionage, participation in a terrorist community and illegal possession of weapons. This is reported by the “Memorial” society.

According to human rights activists, Demchenko presumably died in a pre-trial detention center in the Rostov Region.

The Southern District Military Court of Rostov-on-Don confirmed the death of the arrested person to the TASS agency. The case was terminated on non-rehabilitative grounds, the court noted.

The TASS source clarified that Demchenko died on December 31 from a stroke.

“Memorial” draws attention to the fact that very little is known about the Demchenko case. He was born in 1952 in the city of Mospino, which in 2014 came under the control of separatists of the self-proclaimed “DPR”. It is not known whether he has close relatives and in what territory.

The Southern District Court began considering the case of the Ukrainian at the end of August last year. Seven substantive meetings were held.

  • There are many citizens of Ukraine who were forcibly deported to the territory of Russia. Human rights activists note that in many cases it is impossible to trace the whereabouts of prisoners.
  • According to “Memorial”, since June of last year, the Rostov Regional Court has received 12 espionage cases, one of which involved three defendants. Seven verdicts were handed down, and five more cases are pending in private.
