On Wednesday, a boat carrying migrants from North Africa capsized off the coast of Greece. By noon, the bodies of 59 people were pulled from the water. 104 people were saved. The number of missing people is unknown, since the survivors do not know how many passengers were on board.
The boat was coming from Libya. The cause of the disaster was its overload.
According to the Coast Guard, the boat was spotted on Tuesday evening and was heading to Italy. To the offer of help, the passengers replied that it was not needed. A few hours later, the ship capsized and sank. A rescue operation was launched and is still ongoing.
For Greece, this is the largest shipwreck since the beginning of the year.
- Greece is one of the main routes through which migrants from North Africa and the Middle East try to get to EU countries in search of asylum. Many of them cross the Mediterranean Sea on overcrowded ships without safety equipment. Their ships also dock at the shores of Italy, Spain, Malta and Cyprus.
- According to the UN, about 72 thousand migrants have already moved to Europe in this way.
