A criminal case has been initiated against the Chechen human rights defender Abubakar Yangulbaev for organizing extremist activities, the Baza telegram channel reports. The reason for this, as it is claimed, was the participation in live broadcasts of the opposition movement 1ADAT, led by his brothers Ibrahim and Baisangur Yangulbaev. The broadcasts were dedicated to the fate of those who were kidnapped by members of the security forces of Chechnya’s mother, Zarema Musaeva. She is accused of using violence against a policeman.
It has not yet been officially announced that the case against Yangulbayev has been initiated. He learned about the news from the Kavkaz.Realii journalist. He confirmed that he actually participated in the recordings of the 1ADAT movement as a guest.
“I wake up and find out about the case from you. I don’t know how else to comment,” says the human rights activist. “The other day, I submitted an application to the Investigative Committee regarding the genocide of the Chechen people, maybe it became an irritant.”
Yangulbaev added that there were no calls to the law enforcement agencies and no notification of the arrest of suspects or defendants in the criminal case at the address of the residence.
“Over the past hour, I have given many interviews to various media, including resources of Alexei Navalny, recognized as extremist and banned in Russia. Almost every week, I give comments to the Ukrainian mass media, talking about the army, the Kadyrovs, and the lies of Russian propaganda. They could easily prosecute me for this, but they chose the broadcast where I talk about my mother,” added Abubakar Yangulbaev.
After his detention and interrogation in December 2021, he, at that time a lawyer for the human rights organization “Command Against Torture”, left Russia.
- Musaeva was forcibly removed from Nizhny Novgorod in early 2022, now the 53-year-old woman is in custody in Grozny, despite serious health problems. Human rights defenders of “Memorial” consider her persecution to be politically motivated.
- From the moment of her abduction, the whole family of Zarema Musaeva left Russia – her husband Sayda Yangulbaev left for Europe together with her daughter Alia. Their sons Abubakar, Ibrahim and Baysangur live outside the country.
- In May 2022, it became known that the Supreme Court of Chechnya declared the 1ADAT movement extremist. Before that, Roskomnadzor blocked part of the Internet resources of the 1ADAT movement in opposition to the Chechen authorities on the territory of Russia based on the decision of the Grozny Factory Court. Among the reasons for the blocking, the deputy prosecutor of Chechnya cited publications about the “criminal Kadyrov regime.”
- Ibrahim and Baisangur Yangulbayev stated that their brother does not participate in the activities of the 1ADAT movement, which is in opposition to the Chechen authorities.
- The head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, previously stated that the Yangulbaev family “is waiting for a place either in prison or underground.” State Duma deputy from the republic Adam Delymkhanov publicly threatened to “cut off the heads” of members of the Yangulbaev family, and in Grozny there was a rally of many thousands, the participants of which burned and trampled their photos.
