A case has allegedly been initiated against the Russian journalist Karen Shainyan for one of the so-called “extremist” articles. This is evidenced by the fact that on Friday his name appeared in the register of extremists and terrorists of Rosfinmonitoring. It is not specified under what article exactly they are prosecuting Shainyan and what they are accusing him of.
Shainyan himself responded to the request of “Novaya gazeta – Evropa” that he had not yet been informed about the inclusion in the list of “extremists” and criminal prosecution.
Karen Shainyan is a TV journalist and openly gay. In Russia, he created programs about the life of LGBT people. After the beginning of Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine, he moved to Germany, where together with the Berlin TV channel OstWest, he makes the program “Beyond the Border”, in which he talks about the consequences of the war. The last episode of the program was dedicated to the Russians who deserted from the Ukrainian front, and to the human rights organizations that help them escape.
Last year, the Ministry of Justice of Russia added Shainyan to the list of so-called foreign agents.
