The court in Minsk sentenced Valery Tsepkalo, an unregistered candidate for the presidency of Belarus in the 2020 elections, to 17 years in prison in absentia. This was reported by the state news agency BelTA.

Also, the court deprived the politician of the right to hold positions “related to the performance of organizational and managerial and administrative and economic duties.” The accusation demanded 19 years in prison for Tsepkalo.

The court found the politician guilty under a number of articles of the Criminal Code, including abuse of official authority and receiving a large bribe. It is confirmed that Tsepkalo, as the director of the Park of High Technologies, received more than 151 thousand euros for the selection of a certain company for the construction of the “Administration of the Park of High Technologies” facility.

Valery Tsepkalo is one of the candidates not admitted to the presidential elections in Belarus. He left the country in July 2020 for security reasons – according to the politician, he received information that his arrest was being prepared. His wife, Veronika Tsepkalo, represented the joint headquarters of Svetlana Tykhanouskaya.
