A court in Yekaterinburg handed down sentences to seven local residents involved in the distribution of counterfeit alcohol. Due to the high content of methyl alcohol in drinks, 51 people were injured in 2021, 44 of them died. This was the most mass poisoning with an alcoholic surrogate in the history of the city.
The six guilty were sentenced to 5.5 to 6.5 years of imprisonment. The seventh convict received three years probation.
Criminals diluted ordinary ethyl alcohol with methanol to increase the volume. They poured the mixture into canisters and delivered it to wholesalers, who already packaged it in bottles and sent it to retail outlets in kiosks and markets.
As reported in the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the Sverdlovsk region, counterfeit alcohol was also distributed in other regions of Russia. In total, about 20 searches were conducted, more than eight thousand liters of alcohol of dubious quality were seized. In addition, inspections of the markets of the Sverdlovsk region were carried out. 37 thousand liters of surrogate were also seized there.
