Not far from Kaluga, a drone exploded in the air at an altitude of 50 meters. It happened in the forest outside the city at five in the morning, Kaluga Region Governor Vladyslav Shapsha reported in a telegram. According to him, no one was hurt. It is not specified who owned the aircraft. Kaluga region borders Moscow.
This is not the first such incident in the region. In October, two drones were discovered in the region. One fell and exploded on the territory of the Shaykovka military airfield, where the 52nd Guards Heavy Bombardment Aviation Regiment is stationed. Presumably, the drone flew from the border – Kaluga Oblast borders Bryansk, which in turn borders Ukraine. No one was injured during the explosion, the airfield infrastructure and equipment were not damaged, local authorities reported.
On October 12, anti-aircraft defenses shot down another drone in the south of the Kaluga region. Debris fell in a deserted area.
The 52nd Guards Heavy Bombardment Aviation Regiment is stationed at Shaykovka Air Base. Its composition includes long-range supersonic missile bombers Tu-22M3, which participate in raids on Ukraine.
In December, airfields in the city of Engels in the Saratov Region and Diaghilev in the Ryazan Region were attacked by Ukrainian drones. In total, six Russian servicemen were killed as a result of these strikes. The Ministry of Defense of Russia claimed that the drones were shot down by air defense, and the military died as a result of falling debris. Among the dead in Diaghilev was Major of the Russian Aerospace Forces Yevgeny Navlyutov. A number of telegram channels claimed that Navlyutov was a Tu-22M3 bomber pilot.
Ukraine has not officially confirmed or denied that it was it that carried out these strikes.
