A fire broke out on the nuclear container ship “Sevmorput” in Murmansk on the territory of the “Atomflot” berth. This was reported by the regional office of the Ministry of Emergency Situations. The causes of the fire are not specified.
The area of the fire was 30 square meters. The fire was assigned a higher rank. By midnight, it was liquidated, there were no victims, says the message of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
The fire in the cabin on the nuclear container ship “Sevmorput” did not threaten the reactor installation, stated in “Atomflot”. They also emphasized that no one was injured during the fire and there was no threat “to life support systems”.
According to the information on the Atomflota website, the nuclear container ship “Sevmorput” is the only icebreaker-transport vessel in Russia with a nuclear power plant with a capacity of 29 MW. It allows you to ensure a sailing range of up to nine and a half thousand kilometers with a full supply of diesel fuel. The ship is capable of independently moving in continuous flat ice fields up to one meter thick at a speed of about four kilometers per hour. Nuclear container ship “Sevmorput” was launched on December 31, 1988. It was decommissioned in 2007–2013, dock repairs were completed in December 2014.
In November 2020, near the coast of Angola, during the voyage to the Russian Antarctic station “Vostok”, the vessel’s single propeller blade broke. The nuclear container ship returned to St. Petersburg for repairs. In August 2021, the repair was completed.
