Two teenagers and one child, who were previously taken away from the occupied territories by the Russian authorities, have returned to Ukraine, the head of the Save Ukraine charity fund Mykola Kuleba said.
We are talking about an eight-year-old boy named Elisey, who lived before the full-scale invasion of Russian troops in Kherson with his grandmother, after whose death the child was first placed in a boarding school, and then taken to Russia, as well as two 18-year-old orphan brothers Andrey and Mikhail, who were brought up in a foster family.
Since the beginning of the war, Ukraine accuses Russia of forcibly deporting children from the occupied territories. Kyiv claims that it is about 20 thousand Ukrainian children who were taken by the Russian authorities to the territory controlled by them without the consent of their families or guardians. At the moment, only a few hundred have been returned to their families.
In March, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Child Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova on charges of illegal child abduction. At the same time, the Russian authorities claim that they are “saving children” from hostilities and are ready to return those whom their parents and guardians turn to.
