23-year-old Kenyan runner Kelvin Kiptum set a world record at the Chicago Marathon. He ran the distance in 2 hours and 35 seconds, becoming the first person in history to do it faster during a competition than in 2 hours and 1 minute, reports the International Association of Athletics Federations.
The previous world record was set in September 2022 at the Berlin Marathon. Then two-time Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge ran in 2 hours 1 minute 9 seconds.
In 2019, in Vienna, Kipchoge became the first athlete to run a marathon faster than two hours: in a time of 59 minutes and 40 seconds. This achievement is not considered a world record: it was an exhibition run, where the athlete had no competitors, and the most comfortable conditions were created for him.
- The best women’s time at the marathon in Chicago was shown by a 30-year-old athlete from the Netherlands, Sifan Hassan. She ran the marathon distance at the competition for the second time in her life.
