A memorial plaque in memory of Prigozhin appeared in the building where the office of the late founder of PMC “Wagner” Yevgeny Prigozhin was located, on Lieutenant Schmidt Embankment in St. Petersburg. This is reported by the publication “Fontanka”. It also publishes a photo of the sign.
“From 2003 to 2023, Hero of the Russian Federation, head of PMC “Wagner” Yevgeny Viktorovich Prigozhin worked in this house,” reads the text on the plaque.
Apparently, the installation of the memorial board was not agreed with the city authorities.
As “Fontanka” notes, “Bar Service” LLC, which owns the building, previously applied to the city committee for culture with a proposal to install a plaque in memory of Prigozhin. However, the authorities refused, referring to the fact that the building is an object of cultural heritage, and permission must be given by the Committee for State Control, Use and Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments. There is no information that such permission was given.
Yevgeny Prigozhin died in August 2023 as a result of a private plane crash over the Tver region. Two months earlier, detachments of PMC “Wagner” under his leadership tried to stage an armed rebellion. Officially, the cause of the disaster is unknown, President Vladimir Putin claimed that, according to the investigation, hand grenades were detonated on board.
It is known that Prigozhin openly clashed with the St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov. The funeral of Prigozhin, who had the title of Hero of Russia, was held in private, without the state honors required in such cases.
