The head of the European Commission arrived in Kyiv on the night of February 24 – the second anniversary of the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. Ursula von der Leyen is one of the first foreign guests who decided to come to Ukraine on the occasion of, as she herself wrote on X’s social networks, a “gloomy anniversary”.

Von der Leyen is scheduled to hold talks with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and other leaders of the country. The prospects of European assistance to Kyiv in the fight against Russian aggression will be discussed.

“We support Ukraine even more decisively than ever – financially, economically, militarily, morally. Until this country is finally free,” Ursula von der Leyen noted upon her arrival in Kyiv.

According to the statement of the Italian government, the head of the European Commission arrived in the Ukrainian capital from Poland by train together with the Prime Minister of Italy Giorgi Malone, the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau and the Prime Minister of Belgium Alexandre De Croix.

It is planned that George Melona will hold a video conference with the participation of the leaders of the industrially developed democratic countries of the “Group of Seven” and Ukrainian President Zelensky. He, as expected, will talk about the need for further financial and military support of Ukraine to repel the first full-scale military invasion in Europe since the Second World War.

The visits take place the day after the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and the European Union announced hundreds of new sanctions against Russian structures and officials, whom the West blames for the start and course of the war.
