The court in Seversk, Tomsk region, sentenced pensioner Maryna Novikova to a fine of one million rubles for an article about fakes about the Russian army. This is reported by “TV2” with reference to Novikova’s husband.
Earlier, the prosecutor’s office requested three years in prison for her. 65-year-old Novikova herself asked the court to set her a real term, as she will not be able to pay even the minimum fine of 700 thousand rubles.
Novikova is one of the first accused in the criminal article on fakes. According to the investigation, at the beginning of March 2022, the pensioner posted posts with the stories of her friends from Ukraine in her Telegram channel “Truth of Seversk City”, which at the time had 170 subscribers. In particular, among them were reports about what was happening in Energodar, Zaporozhye region.
The court considered it fake. Reports about the war in Ukraine that do not coincide with the version of the Ministry of Defense of Russia are called fakes by the Russian authorities. Novikova has been under house arrest since April.
“I did everything I could so that my fellow citizens would listen to me and make the right choice, standing on the side of good and the world,” Novikova said before passing the sentence.
- After the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Russian authorities started persecution for anti-war speeches and statements. According to the estimates of OVD-Info, criminal cases for anti-war stance have been initiated against at least 528 people, 154 of them are charged with the article about fakes about the Russian army.
