A promising leader. How steel catches up with concrete in the eyes of architects and builders
[ad_1]
Steel and concrete, which are currently the main construction materials in Ukraine, have a number of significant differences from the point of view of the organization of the construction process.
Concrete has a number of limitations when working with it: working with commercial concrete requires additional equipment, an important condition is the close location of the concrete production plant to the construction site.
Limitations for working with this material are leveled by additives that give it such properties as water, frost and fire resistance. Concrete and reinforced concrete products have long been considered an accessible and relatively inexpensive building material.
However, the production of concrete and reinforced concrete structures is an energy-intensive process, and therefore, the cost of these products significantly depends on the price of energy carriers.
Maksym Kolesnikov admits that there is a lot of traditional approaches in the construction industry and it is difficult for some builders to change habits.
Today, the competition and alternative to concrete as a building material is steel, the main advantages of which are the high speed and accuracy of the construction process, the possibility of creating structures that meet the customer’s requirements as much as possible, as well as the economic feasibility of construction.
The “Ukrainian Steel Construction Center” conducted a study on the comparative analysis of various structural schemes of the frames of class “A” office buildings in Ukraine with the use of steel and reinforced concrete structures. The comparison showed that the higher cost of the steel frame is offset by the lower cost of the enclosing structures and foundations.
The use of steel in the foundation of the building, which accounts for up to 15% of the project estimate, reduces the total cost of the project by 2-3%.
The high strength-to-weight ratio of steel structures allows you to create long spans and significantly increases the efficiency and attractiveness of such real estate objects.
In addition, the use of steel frames allows you to increase the floor space of existing buildings without demolishing and changing the foundation. This was done during the renovation of the “Voronin” sewing factory for the modern “Platforma” business center in Kyiv.
The use of optimization design solutions made it possible to reduce the metal content of structures by more than 30%, and the use of BIM technologies – to reduce the design and delivery of materials by 25%.
It is possible to spread the use of steel in the field of housing construction, Kolesnikov believes.
Such well-known objects as “Olimpiyskiy” NSC, Darnytskyi bridge, shopping and entertainment centers “Kosmopolit”, TsUM and Lavina Mall, protective sarcophagus above the fourth power unit of the Chornobyl NPP were built of steel in Ukraine.
Center Kyiv
A brake on the wider development of steel construction in Ukraine can be a lack of modern production sites and an unwillingness to scale projects.
