A record number of “self-wolf” cases were opened in Vladimir

In June, the military court in Vladimir received 13 criminal cases under the article about the voluntary abandonment of a place of service or a military unit. This is a record, writes “Davod”.

In the first five months of 2023, eight criminal cases were instituted in the region (all of them have already been sentenced) – the same number as in all of 2022. Before the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2021, the Vladimir court handed down only two sentences for leaving a part.

In May, “Mediazona” drew attention to the fact that similar cases have increased throughout Russia: in the first four months, more than a thousand of them were initiated. This is more than in all of 2022. A significant part of such cases ends with conditional terms. Sometimes the judges directly write that they leave the convicted person free so that he can be sent to war, “where he can prove his correction by his behavior and actions.”

However, some receive real terms: the law provides up to ten years of imprisonment. Today, June 29, it became known about one of the most severe sentences for deserting a military unit – a man mobilized from Primorye was given nine years for three escapes from the place of duty.

• In September 2022, Vladimir Putin signed a law on amendments to the Criminal Code, which increased prison terms for leaving the service during hostilities and mobilization. The first criminal case was initiated in December 2022 in Murmansk.
• Putin announced the mobilization of Russians for war with Ukraine at the end of September 2022. A little more than a month later, he announced that the mobilization was over, but he never signed the decree to that effect. Later, in response to a parliamentary request, the presidential administration confirmed that the decree on mobilization continues to apply.
