The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case because of a video on social networks in which a girl lights a cigarette from the Eternal Flame in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. This is reported on the department’s website.

The criminal case was initiated on one of the points of the article on the rehabilitation of Nazism: desecration of a monument to military glory in public and by a group of persons. On April 11, a video of a girl lighting a cigarette from the Eternal Flame on Slavy Square in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk appeared on social networks. Her friend films what is happening on camera and comments.

As noted by “KP-Sakhalin”, the girls study in the 9th grade in one of the city’s schools. The maximum penalty under the specified criminal article is 5 years in prison.

The criminal article on the rehabilitation of Nazism was introduced in Russia in 2014, after the annexation of Crimea. The article is often an instrument of political persecution of critics of totalitarianism, Soviet repressions and Stalin’s policies, as well as supporters of Ukraine. The number of people who are accused of rehabilitating Nazism in Russia is increasing every year.
