A teacher from Nizhny Novgorod was sentenced in a criminal case for discrediting the army

The Soviet District Court of Nizhny Novgorod sentenced history teacher and activist Ilya Myaskovsky in the criminal case of discrediting the army. He was fined 250,000 rubles, OVD-Info reports, and the prosecution demanded that he be sent to prison.

The reason for the persecution was his anti-war posts in the “Nizhegorodskoe grazhdanskoe dyvnikie” public in the VC. The criminal case was opened in October 2022, before that, five administrative protocols were drawn up, the editorial office of Radio Svoboda reported.

Local publications call Myaskovsky one of the last active participants in anti-war actions in Nizhny Novgorod. It is noted that he was detained on the eve of Teacher’s Day, which is celebrated on October 5. During the investigation, the court banned him from using the Internet.

In his last words, Myaskovsky noted that this measure did not help the Russian troops advance in Ukraine, “OVD-Info” reports. In addition, he complained that he was limited in his ability to support himself because of the criminal prosecution.

• The administrative and criminal articles on discrediting the Russian army were added to the criminal code in 2022. The courts recognize any anti-war speeches and accusations of the army of war crimes as discreditable.
