In Russia, the first sentences were handed down for treason in the form of financing the Ukrainian army. Residents of Khabarovsk received them, the BBC reports.

One of the convicts received eight years in prison. Her name, as is usually the case in treason cases, is not mentioned, but the BBC assumes that it is 24-year-old Tamara Parshina. She became the first Russian woman to receive a term on charges of treason since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Parshina was detained in March 2023 in Khabarovsk and transferred to Moscow. According to the investigation, she transferred 2,500 rubles for weapons, ammunition and uniforms for the Armed Forces of Ukraine “as she disagreed with the conduct of the SVO.”

The second resident of Khabarovsk, whose name is also withheld, was sentenced by the court to seven years in the colony in the case of the financing of the Armed Forces of Ukraine back in October.

The BBC notes that both cases were considered with record speed: in two and one session, respectively. In addition, both received terms of less than 12 years – the minimum punishment under the article on treason. Taking this into account, the BBC assumes that the accused have made a deal with the investigation: for help in the investigation, the punishment can be reduced.

  • According to the data of the human rights organization “First Department”, 2023 became a record for the number of initiated cases on the article about state change. Only according to official information, 63 criminal cases have been brought to the court, 33 of them have already been sentenced. Human rights activists expect that next year there will be even more people accused of treason.
