Then he joined a group going on an excursion to the demilitarized zone on the border of South Korea and North Korea, and there he crossed the border. There he was detained by North Korean border guards.
The conditions of King’s detention in North Korea are still unknown. In order to find out and further decide his fate, an interstate group of mediators was created, in which representatives of the USA, South Korea, China and Sweden participated. About a week ago, there were reports that Pyongyang is considering the possibility of deporting King.
North Korean state media presented the incident with King as a soldier’s protest against “inhumane treatment and racial discrimination in the American army and social inequality in the United States” and reported that he allegedly wanted asylum.
