Academician Alexander Aseev received a suspended sentence for fraud

A court in Novosibirsk sentenced the former head of the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), academician Alexander Aseev, to 4 years in prison. TASS writes about it. The court found him guilty of large-scale personal fraud and imposed a fine of 500,000 rubles.
The academician said that he was disappointed with the court’s decision and would appeal the verdict.
According to the investigation, from 2009 to 2015, Aseev rented and then illegally privatized a cottage under the management of the Russian Academy of Sciences and federal property. Aseev stated that he does not consider himself guilty.
On August 3, 2022, the prosecutor’s office submitted to the court the case against the former head of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Alexander Aseev was accused of fraud, committed “with the use of official position in person on a large scale.” According to the case materials, he is considered guilty of stealing 45 million rubles. The scientist was threatened with up to 10 years of imprisonment.
Scientists of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences wrote a letter in defense of Aseev with a demand to drop the criminal case. Among the signatories of the appeal are 12 academicians.
- Aseev was the chairman of the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences from 2008 to 2017. In 2014, 60 cottages were privatized in Akademhorodka. The academician noted that he invested significant funds in his cottage, as he considered the cottage as a place to receive high-ranking foreign guests.
