Alibaba founder Jack Ma returned to China for the first time after spending an hour abroad. This is reported by The Wall Street Journal with reference to sources.
According to the publication, Ma spent most of the year in Japan and returned to China a few days ago.
On Monday, Ma visited the school that he and his Alibaba partners founded in Hangzhou in 2017. During the visit, he met with teachers and discussed, among other things, the challenges posed to the education system by artificial intelligence technologies such as ChatGPT.
Last November, the Financial Times reported that Jack Ma had left China and was living in Tokyo. Ma’s departure occurred against the background of pressure from the Chinese authorities on technology companies. The businessman rarely appeared in public after criticizing government officials at a conference in Shanghai in 2020, saying that regulatory measures “invented by old men” do not correspond to the times, and accused them of red tape and protecting the interests of banks.
In April 2021, China’s State Administration of Market Regulation fined Alibaba Group Holding Limited 18.2 billion yuan ($2.8 billion) for antitrust violations, a record corporate fine for China. The regulator accused the company, known in the European market for the AliExpress online store, of forcing sellers to trade only on one platform.
