Almost 43,500 Russian soldiers have been confirmed dead in Ukraine

As of February 2, the names of 43,460 Russian soldiers who died in the war in Ukraine are known. Losses were calculated by “Mediazon” and the Russian service of the BBC together with a team of volunteers.

Among the dead, 8,099 are former prisoners recruited for the war in the colonies, 5,216 are mobilized.

Over the past two weeks, 1,176 names have been added to the list of the dead, 15 of them in the rank of lieutenant colonel or higher.

Most funerals come to Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk, and Rostov regions, as well as Buryatia.

The researchers calculate based on open sources – reports from local administrations, mass media and relatives of the dead, as well as data from cemeteries. The real number of losses, in their opinion, can be at least twice as high.

Earlier, the head of the CIA, William Burns, said that since the beginning of the war, 315 thousand Russian soldiers had been killed or wounded. Journalists believe that Burns’ estimate is close to reality.

  • Moscow and Kyiv do not disclose losses in the war in Ukraine, telling only about the losses of the enemy. Parties to military conflicts tend to exaggerate their successes and downplay their failures, a study by the BBC and Mediazone is one of the most important independent estimates of the number of casualties.
