An activist from Irkutsk who tried to stop the train was sentenced to 12 years

The Eastern District Military Court sentenced Ilya Podkamenny, a 19-year-old resident of Irkutsk, to 12 years in prison. Last November, he tried to stop the movement of trains by attaching leaflets to the rails. He also spoke out for the independence of Siberia and was allegedly planning to set fire to the military enlistment office.
The court found him guilty on five criminal counts: preparing for a terrorist attack, justifying terrorism on the Internet, facilitating terrorist activities, receiving training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities, as well as two episodes of public incitement to extremism.
According to “Mediazona”, Podkamenny tried to stop the train in May last year, when he was not yet 18 years old. He wrapped the rails with wire, attached to it leaves from a school notebook with the inscriptions “Death to katsaps!”, “Putinists will hang around instead of leaves”, “Freedom of Siberia!” – said the train driver. Noticing the obstruction on the tracks, he stopped the train and removed the leaves and wire, and later informed the police.
Ilya Podkamenny was arrested in November 2022. Those close to him told Sibir.Realii that, in addition to leaflets, the police and the FSB showed interest in the telegram channel he ran and on which he allegedly collected money to set fire to the military enlistment office. Podkamenny’s lawyer stated that there were no calls for terrorist attacks on the channel, only a discussion of sabotage that had already taken place on the railway.
