An LGBT refugee from Russia committed suicide in the Netherlands

Antonina Babkina, a transgender woman from Russia who received refugee status in Europe, committed suicide in the Netherlands. Earlier, she complained about the lack of necessary medical care. The organization LGBT World Beside, which announced the death of Babkina, said that this is already the fifth suicide among Russian LGBT refugees in the Netherlands in an hour.

Muscovite Antonina Babkina, formerly Anton Babkin, began transgender transition in 2019. In 2022, she left Russia and requested asylum in the Netherlands. In her Telegram channel, Babkina complained that she was not provided with medical care in the refugee camp, despite her severe symptoms of depression. She tried to obtain the appointment of antidepressants with the help of a hunger strike and through the court, but to no avail, clarifies the publication “That’s how”.

Human rights organizations have repeatedly reported on poor conditions in refugee camps in the Netherlands. They are denied the necessary medical and social assistance, they are often denied asylum, despite the presence of a threat to the family’s life. This applies not only to LGBT+ people, but also to other asylum seekers. The Russian “Movement of conscious refusers” appealed to the government of the Netherlands with the demand to pay attention to the cases of suicides in the camps.
