Former football player and coach of the Ukrainian national football team Andriy Shevchenko was elected president of the Ukrainian Football Association on Thursday. His candidacy was supported by 93 out of 94 participants of the extraordinary congress of the sports organization. There were no other candidates for the position on the ballot.

Shevchenko’s deputy will be former football player and current coach of the Ukrainian national team Serhiy Rebrov.

The previous president of the Ukrainian Football Association, Andrey Pavelko, was removed from his post by a decision of the Congress. In June 2023, he was arrested in a case of embezzlement.

In his speech after being appointed president of the association, Shevchenko said that he intends to raise Ukrainian football to a higher level, despite the ongoing Russian invasion.

Andrey Shevchenko is one of the most titled Ukrainian athletes. He became the champion of Ukraine five times as part of Kyiv “Dynamo” and won the country’s cup three times. As part of the London “Chelsea” he became the owner of the FA Cup and the Football League Cup. However, Shevchenko achieved world fame playing for the Italian “Milan” from 1999 to 2006. As part of his team, he became the champion of Italy, the owner of the Italian Cup, the winner of the Champions League and the owner of the UEFA Super Cup. Playing for Milan, Shevchenko received the prestigious Golden Ball award as the best European football player of 2004 according to France Football. In 2004 and 2005, Ego was included in the UEFA team of the year.

After the end of his career as a player, Shevchenko trained as a football coach. From 2016 to 2021, he led the Ukrainian national team. From November 2021 to January 2022, he trained at the Italian club “Genoa”.
