Ankara stopped the transit of goods to Russia due to US pressure

The government of Turkey, against the background of pressure from Washington, has ordered to stop the transit of goods to Russia, which are under US and European Union sanctions, from March 1. This is reported by Bloomberg with reference to a high-ranking Turkish official.

The agency clarifies that Turkey became one of the main re-exporters of goods for Russia last year. Then the turnover exceeded nine billion dollars. In 2021, this indicator approached six billion.

One of Bloomberg’s interlocutors noted that there should be no problems with goods that were first imported to Turkey and then sold to Russia. He admitted that the restrictions are based on the country of production.

On March 9, Kommersant-FM reported that Ankara had blocked the transit of sanctioned goods to Russia, citing representatives of logistics companies. The interlocutors of the publication connected the transit stop with the recent visit to Turkey by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. Before his trip, experts noted that Washington was concerned about Turkey’s close relations with Moscow.
