Argentina officially refused to join BRICS

[ad_1]

Argentina refused to join BRICS – the association of the world’s largest non-Western economies. The recently elected president of the country, Javier Miley, informed the heads of the club’s member countries about this. This was reported by the Argentine TV channel TN.

As the journalists clarify, Miley said that he does not see any economic benefit or expediency from joining the BRICS. He is ready to develop economic relations with all participating countries, but emphasizes that Argentina can establish bilateral relations directly, without the mediation of the club.

Miley spoke against Argentina’s membership in BRICS even before he was elected president. During his election campaign, he advocated rapprochement with the United States, up to the possibility of the country’s transition from the peso to the American dollar.

BRICS includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. At the club’s last summit in August in South Africa, the alliance announced its plans to accept new members. In addition to Argentina, Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia received invitations to join BRICS. Their membership in the club will begin automatically on January 1, 2024, unless the countries express an official refusal, as Argentina did.

The mass media assume that the prospect of Iran’s entry into the BRICS could cause especially sharp opposition to the new pro-Western Argentine government, which already doubted the feasibility of joining the same economic club with Russia and China.
