Artificial intelligence discovered an unknown play by Lope de Vega

The project based on artificial intelligence analyzed thousands of works and found that one of them is similar to the plays of the Spanish playwright Lope de Vega. The researchers confirmed the computer’s assumption.

In 2017, scientists Herman Vega and Alvaro Cuellar launched the artificial intelligence project Etso to find authors of plays from the Golden Age of Spain that are considered anonymous or signed with incorrect names.

As part of the project, researchers digitized 1,300 such plays using the Transkribus platform, and then the Stylo program compared their language and style with 2,800 digitized works belonging to 350 authors from the Etso database.

It turned out that the anonymous play “Laura the Frenchwoman” is similar to a hundred other works. All of them turned out to be plays by Lope de Vega. The traditional analysis of the find – from plots and names to linguistic features – confirmed the assumption of artificial intelligence.

Lope de Vega wrote about two thousand plays, of which a little more than four hundred have survived to this day. The researcher Vega admitted that “Laura the Frenchwoman” – a story about love, jealousy and social hierarchy – is not the most outstanding of them, but he would be glad to see it staged under the name of the present author.
